SHAPE + COLOR
Mentoring For Vibrant Poems

"People should know: Any size interaction with Caits will change your life, but to have her ear and her careful guidance to yourself will be like an all-expense paid cruise to a land you've got to get to. Her heart is the size of the planet and she is a wizard with wrangling words just so. I have improved my writing confidence, the glint with which I look life in the eye, and my everyday interactions! OK, I'll say it. I'm downright in love with myself."

— Sara Primo, Philadelphia, PA

Working with Caits is like...

"Within 6 months of knowing Caits Meissner, I claimed myself as a writer, read in public for the first time, began studying poetry as a part time joy ride, and wrote 13 pieces under her guidance and sharp eyes that carved breath, life, and depth into my first ever new and coming chapbook.

I am drawn to working with Caits, not only is she committed to her craft, but because she can truly support people in their gifts. (I mean, real people like me who is a little green, cautious and also one who was ready to be daring and always a deep feeler.) Caits' work excites me so much, I put down the last few weeks of my pay of a job that was ending, and asked her to please help me open the door to authentically writing and sharing it with the world. She invited me for 6 weeks to work one on one where we, together, and very intimately revealed writing pieces that otherwise I may have kept hidden.

Her support in the work and outside the work, because let's face it, things are always happening outside the work was undeniably compassionate and just always right on.The gifts I received from the one on ones are final and the pieces that she helped me create are beautiful. I'm proud of who I have become in working with her. She helped nurture me and my place as a writer. I recognize I have a voice. I acknowledge what may be missing in my process and pieces but will keep moving forward. And I am learning that I can be put to work by continual reading and writing in a community of existing poets, creatives, and human spirits and that alone is so worthwhile. She opened her arms and welcomed me into the world of community and poetry and I'm not leaving."

- Amy Lee Czadzeck, Adirondack Region, NY

"I am envisioning and thinking more of my writing and performance with more courage than before. In regards to myself, I think this was a much needed experience because I focused on myself and it felt good after years of burning out in giving and giving to community. You dive into your role as facilitator in ways that I wondered if you met us before, you held our hands but pushed us forward. You invest so much in us and your voice carries us gently. People should know that working with you means there is someone fully invested in your growth.”

- Sonia Guinansaca, New York, NY

"Caits, you are my poetic personal trainer. You push me to feel the burn, when I'd rather skirt the edges and stay safe. You compel me to crack open the essence of my words and dive right in. You hold my words so delicately in your hands, and push me to make them stronger.

I'm so excited to have the strong beginnings of my very own chapbook! Your coaching calls gave me the support I needed to tap into my own wonder. Thanks to your expert and loving touch, my poem, Immigration, as well as my sister's poem, are proudly housed at the Islamic Museum of Australia. Caits, we're making history together!"

- Raidah Shah Idil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

“Poetry, as a craft and a discipline, as something that you pour yourself into daily… really REALLY frightens me. [Caits] allowed me to approach a form that did not feel very accessible to me. I got to play with imagery and language by crafting poems without engaging my critical mind. This sense of play is more often than not a missing critical piece in a healing process. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity, support, space and straight up love Caits shared freely and fiercely.”

- Bilen Berhanu, Brooklyn, NY

“I was able to do things with words I never had before. I am writing more consistently, every single day. I’ve woken up every day with this uplifting sense of purpose to write; to live. I reached out to a poet I’ve been admiring for YEARS and had her not only acknowledge me but my writing AND commend me on it and even offer to help me prepare for an open mic! I’ve found myself being even more free with how I choose to express how I feel outwardly and feel amazing in it, like this is MY body and MY space and I get to choose how I show up this world (no matter how funky that looks). [Caits] really helps you grow as a writer, as a woman, as a human being!!”

- Annette Estevez, Queens, NY

"When Caits is working with you, she shows up fully. She tries to really see you- who you are, where you come from, what you’re into. She is intuitive, present, and kind. She challenges gently. Caits has this magical ability to coax out your words, images, and ideas. She teaches you to arrange and rearrange until there's a spark.

When I came to Caits, I felt I was going through a stuck, barren phase as a writer. I was surprised to see how much I was actually able to produce with her while going through a dry spell. There were so many moments of surprise, images formed, and something started to breathe. And I realized something while working with Caits: It's not always that the writer can give life to writing; sometimes it's the writing that sparks life in the writer. And that is a gift."

"Working with Caits was one of the most enriching, playful, and creative-life-enhancing processes I’ve been a part of. She reads with a sharp and generous eye, bringing an abundance of enthusiasm and spirit to her work. During our time together she breathed new life into several old poems and gave me plenty to chew on with the new forms, techniques, ideas, and approaches she introduced me to. This woman has soul, talent, and an abundance of generosity. It was a total blessing to work with her!"

"To say Caits is amazing oversimplifies her contribution. Caits pours into her students emotionally and spiritually…yes it may sound weird but it was a spiritual experience. The prompts challenged me to see outside of myself and to create a body of work I didn't know could exist.  Most of the poems were based on hurtful experiences and they were handled with care. Caits allowed me to release the emotional attachment (my way) which ultimately molded a new life story. Also she jolted me to see that words are not just words but are in fact change agents. If anyone is looking to be broke wide open and take your writing to another level I would highly recommend Caits as your writing mentor/editor."
